this week has been incredibly long… already. do you ever have those days when you really just don’t want to work? for some reason, that’s been my whole week thus far.
i didn’t get kicked off the first round, so that’s neat! i beat my goal:)
so the new challenge… hmm. i don’t know if i am over-thinking it or what? my book is DuckTales: Secret City Under the Sea. and well DuckTales is difficult, because this book is a part of a series. it doesn’t have a clear beginning or a clear ending. we are not allowed to use story lines or characters from the actual book and so, i’m wondering about the ambiguity of what we will be judged on with this song.
this particular story ends up with the ducks sailing under water… can i write a song about that? if i don’t make any other allusions to the book, is that enough? “inspiration” is a capricious thing, i’m just afraid i may not entirely get what the judges are looking for, or really, what anyone watching is looking for out of a DuckTales serial. For me, what it boils down to is good-natured adventure and friendship whether it be the ducks or anyone/thing else. So, i guess we’ll see, i just hope the judges have read these books enough to get the connections.
and if not, ooooooooooooh well:)
food. now. bye.

Ok, so I’m a little slow on the blooooggggggging this week. Been a busy one…I’m finishing my taxes…er, starting them…W.A.P.I.T.A! But, aside from my bright financial picture (please note sarcasm here), I’m excited to have won the first week’s challenge for my song “Captain Obvious” despite the tough competition! So many great songwriters this season…keeping me on my toes!
I was glad to get the summer song out of the way and hope that “Summer Somewhere” spoke to some of you. It was a pretty tough weather week to write a song about summer so I decided to write one about escaping winter to find summer instead. Hope it played well with the judges…I think it did I really appreciate the votes from those of you that took the time to give me some of your energy…always appreciated… and please keep it up!
I’m hoping that you’ll like what I come up with for the week 3 challenge as well. I’m writing a children’s song based on the book “The Lion King”. “Hakuna Matata!” Wish that were playing out for me on this one! I’ll get there eventually.
I’ve got a couple of shows this weekend to tell you about. Friday 4/1 I’ll be playing in support of a very talented s/s, Julie Oehme, at Shank Hall in Milwaukee. Then on Saturday 4/2 I’ll be at Baba’s in Sun Prairie playing for their grand opening celebration. There’s more info at my website www.MarkCroftMusic.com in the gigs section. Check it!
That’s all for now…will try to blog again this week…now back to my taxes. Where’s that 1099 again?
Peace,
MC
PS>Anna Wang, who was voted off the show on Monday has a show coming up at the High Noon Saloon on Thursday, April 14th, with her band Anna Wang and the Oh Boys. Hope I got that right. I’ve heard great things about her group and i’m sure it’ll be alot of fun. She’s got a great spirit and alot of talent! Check it out!

I want to give a game ball out to Jason for thinking of putting his lyrics up, and a half a game ball to Mauer for realizing to do it before I did. Â After all, this is a songwriting competition. Â That being said, I will post mine in this blog as well. Â Game ball also goes out to Charlie for garnering some solid press for his efforts thus far, check out his blog to see what I am talking about.
You might be wondering why when you click on the tab on my page that says “Read Their Blog,” it takes you to Dan Walkner’s Blog. Â Well the truth is that Dan and I are actually the same person. Â Some nights I am the mild mannered, polite, sober, punctual singer of The Mighty Short Bus. Â But others, I am the hard drinking, skull crackin’, lady killin’, slide guitar slingin’, blues singin’ monster badass in Clovis Man. Â Notice how you never see us in the same room at the same time??? Â Well now the secret is out, so come see me play in both of my forms. Â But don’t tell me about this when I am Dan, I will probably pretend like I don’t know what you are talking about.
I’ll see if the webmasters at 105.5 can fix the blog glitch.
Here are the lyrics
Nothin But The Summertime words/music; Frank Busch
I donât remember, the last thing you said to me.
I think its safe to say, it was just as soft and sweet,
As your sun-drenched skin, and your long dark hair
No one ever looked so good, just lying around in their underwear
I must apologize for my forward speak and my one track mind, you see,
I canât stop staring, when all youâre wearing isâŚ
The summertime,
Weâll move in slow motion.
It blows my mind
How you smell like sugar and suntan lotion
Iâll never find,
Anyone who looks as fine as you,
Wearing nothing, but the summertime.
I know a place, its not too far away,
Its got trees and theyâve got leaves
Blockinâ the view from the old highway
Itâs just an old fishinâ hole my grandpa used to show me when I was young..
When I was young.
You and I should take a drive with a picnic blanket and a bottle of wine.
Do some truth or darinâ, till all weâre wearin is..
The summertime
Tramps like us got nothing to lose
It blows my mind
How you shake off your dress and my summertime blues
Iâll never find
Anyone who looks as fine as you,
Wearin nothing, but the summertime
I canât help starin, when all your wearin isâŚ
The summertime,
Youâre the only thing better than Barbeque
You blow my mind
Thatâs why I fell in love with you..
Iâll never find,
Anyone who looks as fine as you,
Wearing nothing, but the summertime.

I’ve never been on what most people consider a real road trip. Nothing across country, sleeping in my car, or driving through the mountains. I guess I’ve lived a sheltered life.
When we were asked to write a song influenced by summer, however, I started thinking about an experience I had one early summer during college. I knew a girl then who was going through a pretty rough patch, and one night we decided to just start driving. She and I didn’t get very far -Â which is really funny when I think of it now -Â but that wasn’t the point.
Anyway, that’s where this tune came from. One of the first nights of summer – the night you roll your windows down for the first time – and the closest thing I ever had to a real road trip.
Oh so young, so young then
Packed our dreams that we left unsaid
I brought my pride, she left her shame
She left her shame
Â
Took to the road, to heal the pain
The pride of youth to light our way
Our time was short, the road was long
The road was long
Â
She said
Â
Give me the open road, give me the skies
Give me the summer breeze, oh itâs all I need
Give me the open road, give me the skies
Oh our redemption lies
Under the summer skies
Â
She said, âWindows down, the summerâs here
Letâs ride this road âtil she disappears
The dawn will break, it will wash us clean
It will wash us cleanâ
Â
She said
Â
Give me the open road, give me the skies
Give me the summer breeze, oh itâs all I need
Give me the open road, give me the skies
Oh our redemption lies
Under the summer skies
Â
Oh so young, so young then
Thanks for listening.

I was happy to be able to work in a shoutout to Uecker in my summer song. Here are the lyrics for anyone who is interested, although this site is not letting me format them to show breaks between verses. Oh well. Thanks for listening.
Itâs 5:00 and Iâm flying home
As fast as I can
Find you standing on the porch
A half-drank mojito in your hand
That look in your eyes
Says all that there is to say
Weâve been waiting
9 long months for this day
Finish that drink, mix us up another
Weâll pack up the kids and leave them with your mother
Itâs the first night of summer
Baby, Iâm taking you out
Everywhere you look
You see the signs
The roadside stands are open
Clothes are out on the line
The smell of charcoal
Is blowing in from the patio
Ueckerâs calling play by play on the radio
Kids next door are selling Kool-aid for a quarter
Days are getting longer; skirts are getting shorter
Itâs the first day of summer
Baby Iâm taking you out
Thereâs a rooftop party at a bar downtown
Or we could roll down the windows and drive around
Just drive around
Do you remember when we were young
And still in school
Weâd hop my neighborâs fence
For a midnight dip in his pool
Lie down in the grass
And look up at the summer sky
Count the shooting stars
As they went dancing by
The Southern Cross is flying high above you
Tonight Iâm gonna show you just how much I love you
Itâs the first night of summer
Baby Iâm taking you out

I was fiddling around with this weeks challenge, which is to write a children’s song inspired by an assigned book, I got Bambi. Â I started singing some random lines, and then it hit me, the word bambino. Â Maybe that is why they named the boy deer with such a girly name… Either way, I think I might use it. My son is happy cause he has a new book, and we have read it 3 times since Monday. Â I think I might have a surprise in store for Monday, so be sure you tune in….
Anna is gone, and that is a shame. Â We had become fast friends since we met three weeks ago, and she will be missed. Â Her and I had hoped to get paired up if there was a duet challenge, yes, so we could combine our names and call ourselves the “Wankers” lol. Â We still might work out a duet, just for giggles.
The summer song challenge was tough, I spent all week working on a song. Â Changing musical parts, writing and rewriting lyrics, rehearsing it.. Then on Sunday I went downstairs and wrote an entirely new song and used it… That’s how it goes sometimes. Â You can work and work trying to force something. Â And then you can just shut your mouth and listen to the words as they escape your brain… Try to catch them on paper as fast as you can before they slip away. Â I hope you like my brain drippings

hey everyone! last monday yielded a fantastic buch of songs from all the musicians, and i’m looking forward to next week.
of course there are things i’m not looking forward to, specifically making another elimination. jon unintentionally threw me under the bus this last monday when we had to eliminate our first contestant, citing me by name as he asked anna wang to leave the stage. he also inferred that she was being kicked off for being âtoo sexualâ in her songwriting, which was not the reason at all (albeit something we discussed), but i understand his panic â the first cut is the deepest. eliminating people after you have gotten to know them is tough. in reality, anna was chosen for elimination because her song and performance was simply not as strong as the others last week, and unfortunately for anna, she didnât have any previous songs to lean on. so goes the first elimination.
if you’re interested, i will be doing more extensive blogs each week on our website, and will link there each week. good luck to all the contestants on their children’s book inspired songs, and tune in soon.
